First steps after water damage

  1. Make sure the area is safe. Turn off electricity to wet areas only if you can do so safely.
  2. Stop the source of water if you can, such as a supply valve.
  3. Photograph the damage before moving or discarding anything, for your insurance records.
  4. Move valuables and electronics away from standing water.
  5. Contact a restoration provider and your insurer. Ask each provider about availability, pricing and what the inspection includes.
